Hello! I am Syasya, a Healthcare Merit Award scholar currently in my first year studying Nursing at the National University of Singapore. I will be joining the Woodlands Health Campus under National Healthcare Group (NHG) after graduation.
Nursing is a highly skilled and well-rounded profession with perse responsibilities and many different opportunities for specializations. It is also one of the few careers in the world that allows you to connect and care for your patients on a personal and deep level. It allows close interactions with patients and enables you to learn more about them through your care. For me, this played a significant role in my decision to join nursing because I really enjoy interacting with people and would like to support patients through their journey to recovery.
My interest and passion for healthcare began at a young age. Growing up, I found myself watching medical documentaries, aspiring to be like the nurses and doctors. I was intrigued seeing how skilled and knowledgeable the medical personnel were in the documentary. There have also been many instances in my life that largely contributed to my decision in pursuing a career in healthcare. One that particularly impacted me was my mother’s open heart surgery in 2018. I was disheartened seeing how much she was suffering after the surgery. However, the nurses who took care of her eased all my worries. From administering her medications to making sure she was comfortable during her recovery, I was reassured to see that she was in good hands. Witnessing how involved they were with her care further fuelled my desire to help those in need and to venture into the healthcare sector.
I have always wanted to be a part of a career where I would be able to leave a positive impact on others and to help improve the lives of others. Although I am only at the beginning of my journey, I hope to work closely with my patients and help them along in their journey. Over the years, I have come to realize how much of an impact I can leave on others even with the smallest acts and I hope to be able to make a difference in my patients’ lives through serving as a nurse. It brings me joy to see the smiles on their faces and it gives me the motivation and drive to constantly improve myself. Being a part of the healthcare industry is equally rewarding as well as challenging. Every patient and situation is different.I believe that these challenges will constantly keep me on my toes and to think out of the box to help my patients. I am ready to embrace new challenges and I hope to serve my community to the best of my abilities!
When I first applied for the scholarship, I was nervous as the idea of it seemed daunting to me, but I decided to give it a go and here I am now. I am grateful to MOHH for granting me this opportunity to pursue what I love and I am truly privileged. As a healthcare scholar, I would be able to meet other like-minded scholars from different healthcare disciplines who share the same passion in healthcare and work together to serve our patients better.
To aspiring scholars, remember that there’s nowhere you can’t go, there’s nowhere you can’t reach, and there’s nothing you can’t do. Believe in yourself and follow your passions. Work hard and persevere to reach your goals!
